\r\n\tUS Secretary of State Marco Rubio has told lawmakers that Syria’s transitional government is very fragile and could soon collapse, which could lead to a full-scale civil war and even division of the country<\/strong><\/p>

Rubio spoke to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Tuesday and warned that Syria is “weeks” away from a possible civil war.<\/p>

\r\nHe explained that given the enormous challenges facing the new Syrian government, the country is “maybe weeks, not months, away from collapse, with a civil war of epic proportions,” which could result in the division of the Syrian territory.\r\n<\/p>

\r\nRubio also noted that officials in Syria’s transitional government “have failed a background check,” suggesting concerns about their legitimacy or capabilities.\r\n<\/p>

\r\nHe said that if the United States had not engaged in Syria, “failure would have been guaranteed.”\r\n<\/p>
